Italy: a funny place for fly fishers

Why this title? Simple: because differently from elsewhere, in this amazing country, the border between professionalism and hobby, theoretically two clear distinct approaches, sometimes tends to disappear or becoming unclear and some other times is totally confused.
Several the matters, but let's try to be simple and proceeding by steps.

First of all it seems useful to proceed with a clarification: for anyone that feels himself as a "liberal" (in economic theory terms), Italy is a quite bizarre country. Too much people asks for more esteem to the private individual freedom of buisness, with less taxes, and less obbligations to the government control, often criticizing political systems that in the past partially or totally did eliminate individual initiative and effort to the global society growth, instead of a general "collective growth".

But as much as you listen to these arguments, as much you can see (every day) real violations of this hope for freedom of buisness.

In Italy most of the time if you want make a new acticity, you have to ask (when not pray) locals, you have to ask "please" even if is not necessary, even if your project not only does not subtract anything to anyone, but even when potentially your project plan can give and make a growth for others with no expenses for them.
If you have, for an example, a full title to teach fly fishing, because you did dedicate your life to passion in fly casting (and you have real talent) and very early you got not one, or two, but three certifications as an instructor, you won competitions, if you write articles for qualified magazines, and you were for years in the market... well, even in this case, if you want to start a new project, it seems that this thing creates immediately a noisy "buzz", when not open rivalry or envy. And then it starts a behaviour pattern already seen: who are you? What do you wanna do here? This is my home, my land, my town "my...", "my..." and so on...
Why? Is this republic of Mafia? Where's the boss to ask permissions to?
Is this for you readers a tidy and honest view of the things?
Why the first feeling is not a genuine curiosity pushed by the clear will to becoming bigger by taking positive inputs by the comparison with others? And why, instead of this, often the first approaches are restricted to a strong statement of power and superiority, by those who think they really have (but in reality not)?

This happens basically because too much hobbists were confused by involved people, they were indicated as good ones, especially basing on their "purchase power" to local shops, and then owners gave them some "false roles" as starrings of a false story or movie
The result was a total proliferation of deeply incompetent people, that are as much arrogant as much they actually incompetent are.
We had some casting schools, but now? people that did not invent anything just introduced in Italy approaches that they were using as thir own tipical, original styles (elswere well known), then they appeared as "gurus" of a discipline, and their best adepts were progressively receiving their investiture, that was as bigger as bigger was their personal envy tho their ancient master, and they wanted to strongly, overtake them... the result?
A second big proliferation happened, this time regarding Fly casting instructors and presumed "masters", that are bigger and better than all the ones before, and so on. Actually we can calculate something like 15 different fly casting schools in Italy, very similar one to each other except for the leading masters they have, and except by the personal rivalry by the "leaders".
But what we have to ask to ourselves is: how did they get certifications, and where, or how did they self entitled as "instructors" or "masters"? Who did and how the were certified, which objective skills they have, and most important, how good they are in teaching?

Another point is the total confuson and would say: overlapping, by market needings (product sale), and fly fishing ethics, behaviours and culture development on the other side.
In Italy a person that want to earn by fly casting tuition have to find a compromise with product dealers, but why you are "forced" to? Why these two professional figures cannot discuss toghether and find a balance? Why the younger has to ask a permit to the older? Where has gone the mutual respect for both: young and old energies and efforts?

For sure every casting instructor uses, chooses, and prefers his own tackle and can be involved suggesting it to his students, but in a clear not hidden or overlapped way, as a clear suggestion being able to make even honest tackle comparisons (tackle comparison is another impossible chapter to speak about in Italy, I'll write more on this).

At the end it seems very difficult to understand why does exist this rivalry based on "possession" of the market and the customers (that is healthy only if it does not exceed some levels), it is also difficult to understand why too much people makes "gaffes" so often instead of learning and taking nourishment by mutual human relationship and connection.

Hope you enjoyed reading and shared some arguments,
see you on the next article.
